| MILFORD Milford is proud of its 17 miles of Coastal Long Island sound. Milford is the 6th oldest town in CT. Milford enjoys many cultural, educational, recreational, and employment opportunities. Milford boasts the second largest town green in New England. There are many Arts and Crafts shows held on the Green. The annual Oyster Festival is adjacent to the Green. Christmas In The Mansion is a unique Milford tradition. It is an annual holiday fair held at Lauralton Hall which is a private girls' high school. Milford has a solid educational system including grammar schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Foran High School has its own planetarium. The Center For The Arts is located in a landmark train station. The Milford Fine Arts Council sponsors productions by the Eastbound Theater Company. Milford has several public beaches including: Gulf Beach offers a birdwatching and fishing pier, concession, restroom, and lifeguards. From the sandy shore you can gaze upon Charles Island, about a half mile offshore where Captain Kidd is said to have buried treasure. The Sound flows gently into Gulf Pond. Walnut Beach is a large beach at the corner of East Broadway and Viscount Drive. There is a small pavilion, restrooms, picnic tables, and great views of the famed Charles Island. Walnut Beach is adjacent to Silver Sands State Park. Silver Sands State Park contains approximately 250 acres of shoreline and it is contiguous with Walnut Beach. This park is presently undergoing development. Anchor Beach is in the Woodmont section of Milford off Chapel St. It is a small crescent beach in a residential beach neighborhood. There are no amenities other than spectacular views. The Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center is a 840 acre habitat comprised of Salt Marshes bordering the Sound and Housatonic River. This is one of the last surviving unaltered coastal properties in CT. Milford Landing is at the head of Milford Harbor which serves as a transient docking facility for visiting boaters. Milford Hospital just celebrated its 80th birthday. Bridgeport Hospital, the Hospital of St. Raphael, and Yale New Haven Hospital are in close proximity to Milford. Milford has its won train station and it is only one hour to New York City. |
