| WEST HAVEN West Haven's boundaries include, New Haven, Milford, and Orange along with the Oyster River, West River, New Haven Harbor, and Long Island Sound. It occupies 11 square miles and has a population of 52,721 residents. West Haven has the distinction of having 1/4 of all of the publicly accessible beaches in CT. West Haven was once the home of Savin Rock which once occupied the West Shore of West Haven. It ran along the West Shore. Redevelopment changed the face of the town. Savin Rock Amusement Park was torn down in the 1960s. Today where over three miles of sandy beach occupy the area, the town's people enjoy boating, swimming, walking trails, beachfront, bocce, and biking trails to name a few. Perhaps you remember Savin Rock's Seaside Amusement Park. It occupied the beach for over 90 years celebratings its hayday from 1927 to 1957. Many of us remember: Peter Frank's Fun House, the wooden flying horses, the wooden roller coaster, the Tea Cup, the Fortune Teller, pony rides, the Ferris Wheel, Thunderbolt, the Laff In the Dark Clown, popcorn, frozen custard, ane the Virginia Reel. West Haven has three independent fire districts: West Shore, Allingtown, and Central Districts. The efforts to consolidate these three districts has been unsuccessful. West Haven is the home of the U.S. Veteran's Hospital, University of New Haven, Yale Bowl, Yale Field, and the famous Jimmies Hotdog and Seafood Restaurant. Jimmies is one of the last reminders of Savin Rock.It was formerly the home of Bayer Pharmaceutical and Armstrong Rubber Company. West Haven will soon have its own Train Station. |
